What we are proposing...
The heritage and character of our South Australian suburbs deserve to be preserved.
Labor have cut made cuts to critical programs aimed at maintaining the heritage and tree canopy of our suburbs.
The Liberal Party will act to ensure the longevity of these iconic South Australian features. Our plan has for themes covering the Adelaide Parklands, heritage, character and tree canopy across our state:
Heritage:
- Introduce a simple process for listing local and state heritage places under a single Heritage Act.
- Implement a strategic approach to identifying heritage buildings and establish a high quality, modern South Australian Heritage Register.
- Re-establish and maintain the Heritage Conservation Grants and expand the fund to $2.5 million per year.
- Introduce a power to require the remediation of derelict local heritage buildings.
Character
- Tighten demolition controls and ensure they apply to more heritage homes.
- Put community at the heart of decision making by empowering local councils and requiring earlier, wider, and more frequent consultation on proposed developments.
Tree canopy
- Reinstate the $2 million per annum Greener Neighbourhoods grant scheme for street trees and the greening of parks (scrapped by Labor in 2022).
- Introduce tough penalties for the illegal removal or poisoning of significant trees.
- Incentivise maintaining and growing our tree canopy on private land.
Park Lands
- Pursue the immediate World Heritage Listing of the Adelaide Park Lands.
- Establish a committee under Green Adelaide to improve the biodiversity of the Park Lands.
- Establish a target to grow the open space footprint of the Park Lands by 5% through the consolidation of existing buildings and reclaiming unused build developments and hard surfaces.
We know that South Australians treasure the beauty of our parklands and suburbs and we will act to ensure the longevity of these iconic South Australian features.
