Strengthening laws and increasing the penalties for racial vilification in South Australia.
What we are proposing...
In light of the horrific terrorist attack at Bondi targeted at the Jewish community, a new Liberal Government will introduce laws that strengthen the Summary Offences Act and Racial Vilification Act.
The plan will:
- Legislate for zero tolerance for incitement, including banning the flags and symbols of recognised terrorist groups, and slogans;
- Introduce additional offences and increase penalties for racial vilification in South Australia;
- Boost Federal and State intelligence sharing;
- Ensure SA Multicultural Commission prioritises anti-racism in line with the core principles of its charter.
For too long antisemitism has been allowed to seep into society and fester.
We have zero tolerance for this in South Australia, and we need tougher penalties and clearer laws to address threats while still protecting freedom of speech.
The State Liberals’ plan will make it more practical to prosecute these offences.
A new Liberal Government will act immediately to introduce these new laws at the first sitting of Parliament following the State Election in March.
This is part of our plan for safer suburbs and stronger communities.
