Protecting the Magill University Site

Protecting the Magill University Site

Ensuring this large piece of public land in the east is protected.

What we are proposing...

The Magill Uni site is one of the last major pieces of public land in Adelaide’s eastern suburb, home to open space, heritage buildings, and facilities generations have used and loved.

With the University Merger first foreshadowed in 2022, members of the community have long been advocating for no net loss of green space on the site.

The area is already facing rapid growth, worsening traffic, limited public transport, a shortage of green space and loss of community facilities, leading locals and community groups to strongly advocate this issue.

The Liberal Party will protect the future of this site if elected. Our vision for the site includes:

  • Sport and recreation - open spaces protected, with upgrades to indoor courts, changerooms and community recreation areas, and guaranteed access for local schools and sporting clubs.
  • Aged care and retirement living - modern, high-quality aged-care and retirement living integrated into the landscape, with all buildings capped at four storeys.
  • Existing infrastructure – no net loss of green space and protecting heritage buildings.
  • Community health and wellbeing hub - expansion of current services into a full health and wellbeing hub offering GPs, mental health, allied health, fitness programs, outreach, and advocacy for the Sturt electorate’s Urgent Care Clinic.
  • Protecting Magill’s future - reuse existing university buildings to reduce costs, safeguard open space, manage congestion, and maintain the site as a long-term community asset.

Unlike Labor, our commitment to the site remains unchanged, and has been formed by listening to our community over many years.

This is part of our plan for safer suburbs and stronger communities.
