Reducing Government Spend on Consultants

Reducing Government Spend on Consultants

Saving taxpayers $80 million.

What we are proposing...

A Hurn Liberal Government will return $20 million a year to the budget by almost halving the state’s spend on government consultants if elected.

Over the past two financial years, State Government departments spent approximately $45 million on external consultants, despite already employing more than 100,000 staff.

While consultants can play an important role in providing specialist advice, governments should focus on using existing resources effectively and only outsource when it clearly delivers better outcomes and lower long-term costs for taxpayers.

Over the past four years, there have been many examples of the Labor State Government throwing taxpayers’ money at consultants without any meaningful results.

It is expected that over the next four years, the Hurn Liberal Government policy would save taxpayers $80 million.

Contractors would be exempt from the policy because of the critical role they play building our roads, staffing our hospitals and supporting frontline services.

This is part of our plan for a more affordable South Australia.
